This coin was issued to commemorate the International Flower and Greenery Exposition.
The International Flower and Greenery Exposition was an international exposition held for 183 days, from April 1 to September 30, 1990, at Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park, which spans Tsurumi Ward in Osaka City and Moriguchi City, both in Osaka Prefecture.
It was the fourth World Expo held in Japan. Since no 5,000-yen coins had ever been issued in Japan prior to this, this was the first 5,000-yen coin ever issued.
In keeping with the Expo’s theme, the obverse of this coin features “a girl wearing a floral wreath, symbolizing harmony between human life, the natural world, and the plant kingdom.”
Until then, Japanese coins had never featured portraits, so this was also the first coin to include a portrait.
The design on the reverse side features the Expo’s “symbol mark” and the Arabic numeral “5,000.”
