This commemorative coin was issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Japan’s court system.
The obverse of the coin features an image of the Grand Courtroom, while the reverse depicts the court staff emblem and the “ Cutleaf cornflower”. The Cutleaf cornflower was chosen as a design element for the 100th-anniversary commemorative coin because its floral meaning is “justice and equality.”
In comparison, 10 million copies of the “International Flower and Greenery Exposition Commemorative Coin”—a 5,000-yen silver coin issued in the same year, 1990—were minted; thus, the mintage of this coin is half that amount, at 5 million. However, since it falls into the category of coins with a high mintage, it is relatively easy to obtain.
