This gold coin was issued in 1993 as a commemorative piece to celebrate the Crown Prince’s marriage.
It was issued to commemorate the marriage of the current Emperor (then Crown Prince Naruhito) to Her Imperial Highness Princess Masako, and is Japan’s first gold coin with a face value of 50,000 yen.
In addition to the gold coin, a 5,000-yen silver coin and a 500-yen white copper coin were also issued.
The obverse of the coin features two cranes and waves. While cranes and phoenixes are frequently depicted on Japanese coins, these birds are considered symbols of auspicious events, which is why they appear on this coin as well.
The reverse features the chrysanthemum, symbolizing the Imperial Family, and the azusa (catalpa tree), which is the Crown Prince’s personal emblem.
Incidentally, this coin won the “Most Technically Advanced Coin” award in the gold coin category at the Mint Directors Conference coin competition in 1994.
