This commemorative coin is a “500-yen white copper coin” issued to commemorate the 1985 Tsukuba Expo.
The Tsukuba Expo was Japan’s second international exposition (World’s Fair), held for six months starting in March 1985 (Showa 60). Under the theme “People, Housing, Environment, and Science and Technology,” it showcased cutting-edge technology, robots, and future lifestyles of the time, sparking a major science boom that attracted more than 20 million visitors.
The obverse of the coin features a beautiful design of the “plum blossom”—the prefectural tree of Ibaraki Prefecture—and “Mount Tsukuba,” the symbol of Tsukuba City. The reverse depicts the Expo’s symbol, flanked by plum blossoms on either side.
Because a very large number of these coins were issued, they are relatively easy to collect.
