Magatama

Magatama are pieces of jewelry used in ancient Japan. They are also famous as one of the Three Sacred Treasures.
Most are C-shaped and made of materials such as jade or stone. While their unique shape is said to represent a “fetus” or the “moon,” it is not clearly understood what they actually symbolize. The Magatama of the Three Sacred Treasures are legendary artifacts that even those involved in their preservation have never seen in person; however, since numerous examples have been excavated from archaeological sites dating back to the Jōmon and Kofun periods, it is believed they likely share a similar shape.
Incidentally, they are still cherished today as mystical items that, when worn, are believed to provide powerful protection against misfortune and promote mental stability. As a result, magatama ranging from modern to ancient pieces circulate on the market. In Japan, arrowheads, pottery, and other artifacts are frequently discovered in fields near archaeological sites, and ancient artifacts found in farm fields or construction sites are sometimes sold at auctions or antique markets.
