This commemorative coin was issued in 1976 (Showa 51) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Showa’s reign.
With a mintage of 70,000,000 coins—a relatively high number—it is relatively easy to obtain.
In terms of size, it is the same as the 100-yen white copper commemorative coin issued for the Sapporo Winter Olympics(1972 Sapporo Olympic 100 Yen Cupro-nickel Coin JNDA#03-4). The design features Nijubashi Bridge and the Imperial Palace on the obverse, and the Imperial Chrysanthemum crest flanked by phoenixes on the reverse.
