This “Old Coin Medal Series” is a set of proof coins issued by the Japan Mint starting in 1999 (Heisei 10). Each set contains a pure silver commemorative medal featuring a design based on a rare Japanese “old coin” from the past.
The second installment features a pure silver commemorative plate modeled after the “Meiji 8 Trade Silver Coins.”
This No. 3 coin, issued in 2001, is the last in the Old Medal Coin series; no further coins have been issued since then.
