The year Showa 64 (1989) lasted only seven days due to the death of Emperor Showa on January 7. The following day, January 8, marked the beginning of the Heisei era.
Since the coin production period itself was not seven days, the number of coins issued was not extremely small. However, the number of coins issued was smaller than the number issued in the same first year of the Heisei era (1989).
