This coin was issued in 1988 to commemorate the opening of the Seto Ohashi Bridge. Built to directly connect Honshu and Shikoku, the Seto Ohashi Bridge was one of the world’s largest bridges at the time.
The obverse of the coin depicts the entire Seto Ohashi Bridge as seen from the Okayama Prefecture side, while the reverse features a map of Honshu and Shikoku.
A total of 20,000,000 of these coins were issued, making it one of the more readily available commemorative coins in Japan.
With the opening of the Seikan Tunnel, the “unification of the archipelago”—connecting the Japanese islands with a single transportation network—was realized.
I think it would be a great idea to add this to your collection alongside the 500-yen coin commemorating the opening of the Seikan Tunnel.
Seto Ohashi Bridge
Construction on the Seto Ohashi Bridge began in 1978, and it took a full nine and a half years to complete. It was designed and built using the best technology available at the time to withstand even large-scale disasters.
While driving across this bridge by car is enjoyable, crossing it by train is also a charming experience. Be sure to visit it.
