This coin was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the National Park System.

The 11th coin in the series features Nachino-Otaki Falls, Odaigahara salamander, and Japanese mountain cherry.

Nachino-Otaki Falls (Nachi Falls), located in Nachikatsuura Town, Wakayama Prefecture, is Japan’s tallest single-stage waterfall, boasting a drop of 133 meters, and is one of Japan’s Three Great Waterfalls. Together with the “Second Falls” and “Third Falls” upstream, it has been designated as a National Scenic Spot.

The Odaigahara salamander is a rare amphibian with a deep blue-purple coloration and is one of the largest among the “small salamanders” found in Japan. It is found in separate populations on the Kii Peninsula, Shikoku, and parts of Kyushu.

Japanese mountain cherry (Shiroyamazakura) is another name for the Yamazakura and is a representative wild cherry tree that has been native to Japan since ancient times. Its most distinctive feature is that its pale pink flowers—which are almost white—and its reddish new leaves bloom at the same time.
