These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
Yamanashi Prefecture coins feature Mount Fuji, the Yamanashi Linear Experimental Line, and grapes (Koshu variety).
Mount Fuji
Japan’s most iconic mountain, standing at 3,776 meters, it is the highest peak in Japan.
Long revered as an object of worship, it has also served as a source of inspiration for various art forms, including paintings.
It was designated a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1952 (Showa 27) and a Historic Site in 2011 (Heisei 23).
Yamanashi Maglev Test Track
Japan’s maglev train test track.
It was laid in eastern Yamanashi Prefecture, with running tests beginning in 1997 (Heisei 9).
Grapes (Koshu variety)
Considered a native Japanese variety with a 1,300-year history, it was cultivated in the Katsunuma region.
It is now cultivated throughout the prefecture for both fresh consumption and wine production.
