These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Yamaguchi Prefecture feature Kintaikyo Bridge and Akiyoshidai.
Kintaikyo Bridge
A five-span wooden bridge spanning the Kinta River in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
Constructed in 1673 (Enpo 1) by Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the third lord of the Iwakuni Domain. It is counted among Japan’s Three Famous Bridges and Japan’s Three Great Unusual Bridges, and is designated as a National Scenic Beauty.
Akiyoshidai
Japan’s largest karst plateau, located near the center of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is designated as a National Park and a Special Natural Monument.
