This coin was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the National Park System.
The 11th coin in the series features Five Aso Mountains, Kuju Highland, and Echinops setifer.
The Five Aso Mountains (Aso Gogaku) are the names of the five main mountains in the Aso Volcanic Group in Kumamoto Prefecture. They consist of Takadake, Nakadake, Nekodake, Eboshidake, and Kijimadake, and are famous for resembling the figure of the Buddha lying down (the Nirvana statue) when viewed from a distance.
Characteristics of the Five Peaks Takadake: Elevation 1,592 m. It is the highest peak among the Aso Five Peaks.
Nakadake: Elevation 1,506 m. It features the crater of an active volcano that still emits white smoke (volcanic plume).
Mount Nekodake: Elevation 1,433 m. This mountain is characterized by its jagged rock formations.
Mount Eboshidake: Elevation 1,337 m. A vast grassland (Kusasenri-ga-hama) stretches out at the foot of the mountain.
Mount Kishimadake: Elevation 1,326 m. It has a rounded shape, and the remains of a large, ancient crater can be seen.
The Kuju Highlands is a plateau located in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, offering sweeping panoramic views of the lush greenery of Aso-Kuju National Park. Major attractions include Kuju Flower Park, Kuju Winery, and the Kuju Highlands Cottages.
Echinops setifer（Higotai） is a perennial plant in the Asteraceae family that produces beautiful, round, bluish-purple flowers. It is a remnant species from the Ice Age, and its population is declining; it is designated as an endangered species on the Ministry of the Environment’s Red List.
