This was the first commemorative coin issued in Japan in 1964. Two types were issued: a 1,000-yen silver coin and a 100-yen silver coin.
As the first major national event since the war, an unusually large number of these commemorative coins were issued.
The obverse features Mount Fuji and the national flower, the cherry blossom, while the reverse features cherry blossoms and the Olympic emblem, along with the denomination “1000.”
Exchanges for these commemorative coins began just before the Games, and long lines formed on the very first day of exchange.
