This 100-yen coin was issued to commemorate the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics.
The Sapporo Winter Olympics were the first Winter Olympics held in Japan.
While 1,000-yen and 100-yen commemorative coins were issued for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, only the 100-yen coin was issued for the Sapporo Olympics.
Measuring 30 mm in diameter, it is larger than the 500-yen coin currently in circulation (26.5 mm).
The obverse of the coin features the Olympic cauldron, while the reverse depicts the Olympic rings and a snowflake motif.
At the time, the coins were reportedly exchanged at financial institutions, but later, products packaged in commemorative sets produced by private companies began circulating.
Although the mintage was high, so the coins themselves are not particularly valuable, error coins and similar variants are sometimes traded at relatively high prices.
Examples of error coins include those with a misalignment in the angles of the designs on the obverse and reverse, which command high prices.
