The Kyoto coin features the national treasure “The Tale of Genji Emaki” depicting “Yadorigi San.”
The Tale of Genji Emaki is an illustrated story written in the 11th century during the Heian period.
The author is Murasaki Shikibu, who served as a lady-in-waiting to Fujiwara no Michinaga’s daughter.
The Tale of Genji depicts the world of the aristocracy during the Heian period, centered on the life of the protagonist, Hikaru Genji.
The “Genji Monogatari Emaki” is an illustrated scroll based on the “Genji Monogatari,” created in the 12th century, approximately 150 years after the story was written.
It is the oldest existing illustrated scroll in Japan.
Yadorigi San depicts a scene from the “Genji Monogatari Emaki” in which Nio plays the biwa for Nakakimi.
