There are jagged edges on the sides, and only four places are shaped differently from the rest.
The reverse side is the same.
The design imitates the coins of the Edo period.
It is written in kanji as “local Autonomy” in four characters.
The year and “JAPAN 47PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM” are engraved.
The obverse has a different design for each prefecture.
The Nagano type depicts Zenkoji and cows.
This is likened to the Japan proverb “Drawn by a cow to Zenkoji”.
Zenkoji is a venerable temple with a history of more than 1,400 years and has been revered by Japan people since ancient times.
It is a famous place in Nagano Prefecture where many tourists still come.
The bell in the temple grounds was rung as the signal for the opening of the Nagano Olympics (1998).
