These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Ishikawa Prefecture feature the Kotoji lantern and Yukitsuri of Kenroku-en Garden.
Kenroku-en Garden
Kenroku-en Garden is a representative daimyo garden from the Edo period and is counted among Japan’s Three Great Gardens alongside Mito Kairakuen and Okayama Korakuen.
In 1985 (Showa 60), it was designated a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty. Furthermore, the light-up events held during autumn and winter are incredibly fantastical, with golden snow ropes floating in the darkness.
Kotoji Lantern
The Kotoji lantern, placed on the north shore of Kasumiga Pond, has become a symbol of Kenroku-en.
Its name is said to derive from its split legs, resembling the pegs that hold the strings of a koto (Japanese zither).
Yukitsuri
The conical snow stands, protecting trees from heavy snow, are famous as a winter tradition in the Hokuriku region. At Kenroku-en, gardeners begin installing the snow stands annually starting November 1st.
