Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Yamagata Prefecture feature the Mogami River and cherries(Sakuranbo).
Mogami River
The Mogami River is a Japanese river with a total length of 229 km. Since ancient times, this river has supported the lives and culture of Yamagata residents as a source of agricultural water and a transportation route.
It is also considered one of Japan’s most renowned rapids and is famous for Matsuo Basho’s haiku: “Gathering the May rains, swift flows the Mogami River.”
Cherries(Sakuranbo)
The fruit of the cherry tree (Prunus mume), a member of the rose family. Yamagata Prefecture is famous for cherries, accounting for about 70% of Japan’s total production.
The “Sato-nishiki” variety, the most widely produced in Japan, was bred through cross-pollination within Yamagata Prefecture.
It has also been selected as the prefecture’s official tree.
