These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
Ehime Prefecture’s coins feature the Dōgo Onsen Main Building and mikan oranges.
Dōgo Onsen Main Building
Dōgo Onsen is a hot spring located within Matsuyama City. It has a history of 3,000 years. The Dogo Onsen Main Building, considered the symbol of the hot springs, was constructed in 1894 (Meiji 27). It is known as Japan’s oldest hot spring.
Representative facilities include the “Dogo Onsen Main Building,” designated a National Important Cultural Property; the “Dogo Onsen Annex Asuka no Yu,” incorporating architectural styles from the Asuka period; and the “Dogo Onsen Tsubaki no Yu.”
Mikan
Ehime Prefecture is known as one of Japan’s leading mikan (mandarin orange) producing regions. For citrus fruits overall, it ranks first in Japan in production volume (approximately 220,000 tons).
Furthermore, the mikan flower is designated as the prefectural flower of Ehime Prefecture.
