These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Kagoshima Prefecture feature the Jomon Sugi, Mount Nagata, and Yakushima Rhododendron.
Jōmon Sugi
The Jōmon Sugi was registered as a World Natural Heritage site in 1993 (Heisei 5). It is a Yakusugi (Yakushima cedar) located on the southeastern slope of Mount Takatsuka in central Yakushima.
Its age is estimated to be between 2,170 and 7,200 years old, with a height of 25.3 meters. It is said to have been named the “Jōmon Sugi” (Jōmon-era cedar) because it is considered a living fossil from the Jōmon period.
Mt. Nagata
Mt. Nagata is one of the high peaks towering over central Yakushima, known as the Oku-dake range, with an elevation of 1,886 meters.
Near the summit, many exposed granite rocks, eroded over time, are visible, creating a distinctive landscape with ridges resembling erected folding screens.
Yakushima Rhododendron
The Yakushima Rhododendron is an evergreen shrub, approximately 2 to 3 meters tall, endemic to Yakushima, inhabiting elevations above 1,200 meters.
From late May to early June, it blooms with 5 to 12 pink or crimson flowers at the tips of its branches.
