These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The Miyagi Prefecture coin depicts Date Masamune and the Keicho Embassy ships.
Date Masamune (1567–1636)
A Sengoku daimyo of Dewa and Mutsu provinces. First lord of the Sendai domain in Mutsu. His equestrian statue stands at the site of the main keep of Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle), built by Date Masamune on a naturally fortified site.
Keicho Embassy to Europe
The Keicho Embassy to Europe was dispatched by Date Masamune, founder of the Sendai domain, to the King of Spain and the Pope in 1613 (Keicho 18). Masamune sought direct trade with New Spain (Mexico) in exchange for permitting Christian missionary activities within his domain. The selected envoy, Hasekura Tsunenaga, sailed across the Pacific on the Western-style sailing ship “San Juan Bautista,” built within the Sendai domain, accompanied by the missionary Luis Sotelo.
They were received by King Philip III of Spain and Pope Paul V, returning to Japan seven years later in 1620 (Genna 6).
