These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.

The Oita Prefecture coin depicts the Minami-Churomon Gate of Usa Jingu Shrine and Yokozuna Futabayama, a native of Oita Prefecture.

Usajingu Shrine
The head shrine of the Hachiman shrines, said to number over 40,000 nationwide. It is said that the first main hall, Ichino-goten, was built on its current site in 725.
The current main hall was constructed in the late Edo period, designated a National Treasure in 1952 (Showa 27), and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2012 (Heisei 24).

Futabayama
Futabayama (1912–1968) was a sumo wrestler born in Usa City, Oita Prefecture. He was the 35th Yokozuna of professional sumo. His 69 consecutive wins, achieved between 1936 and 1939, remain the all-time record even over 70 years later. In 1946, at age 34, he shaved his head and took the name Tokitsukaze as a retired sumo stablemaster. He continued contributing to the development of the sumo world, serving as Chairman of the Japan Sumo Associa
