These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Tottori Prefecture feature images of the Tottori Sand Dunes and the Sengan Matsushima (Uradome Coast) of the San’in Coast.
Tottori Sand Dunes
These are Japan’s representative coastal sand dunes, stretching approximately 16 km east-west and 2 km north-south along the Sea of Japan.
They are designated as a National Natural Monument. The dunes are famous for their large, bowl-shaped depressions known as “suribachi” and the patterns created by the wind, called “fūmon.”
Sengan Matsushima
Sengan Matsushima is a representative scenic spot along the Uradome Coast, designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument. It is located in Tottori Prefecture.
The island features sea caves with tunnels piercing through them.
It is said that the name originates from a story during the Edo period when the lord of the Tottori domain, Ikeda, visited the island for a boat ride and, captivated by its beauty, declared, “Whoever can transplant this pine tree with its rock into my garden shall be rewarded with a thousand koku of rice.”
