These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.

The coins of Fukui Prefecture feature golden shachihoko, irises, and the Atsumi Peninsula.

Golden Shachihoko of Nagoya Castle
Construction of Nagoya Castle began in 1610, and a pair of golden shachihoko (one male and one female) were placed on the castle tower. It was destroyed by fire during World War II in 1945, but both the main tower and the golden shachihoko were restored in 1959.

Iris
The iris is a perennial plant belonging to the Iris family. The iris colony at Kotaki West Pond (Kariya City, Aichi Prefecture) is said to be one of Japan’s three major natural habitats for irises and is designated as a national natural monument.

Awaji Peninsula
The Awaji Peninsula extends along the Pacific coast of Aichi Prefecture. Koiiji Beach, located near the tip of the peninsula, is a beautiful sandy beach approximately 1 km long. Additionally, the coastal area along the Pacific side is a nesting site for the loggerhead sea turtle, a species listed as “endangered” on the Ministry of the Environment’s Red List of endangered wild species.
