These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coin depicts the H-2 rocket, a symbol of Tsukuba Science City, and Mount Tsukuba, representing the city’s commitment to scientific and technological advancement and progress toward the future.
The H-2 rocket is Japan’s first domestically produced rocket.
It was developed by the National Space Development Agency, the predecessor of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
A full-scale model is on display at the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center in Tsukuba Science City, and a full-scale replica is on display at the Tsukuba Expo Center.
Mount Tsukuba is a mountain located in Ibaraki Prefecture. At 877 meters above sea level, it is not a particularly tall mountain.
