These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Hokkaido feature Lake Toya and red-crowned cranes.
Lake Toya is a lake located in Hokkaido.
The surrounding area is designated as Shikotsu-Toya National Park and is registered as a “Japan Geopark” and “Global Geopark” as the Lake Toya-Usu Geopark.
It has also been selected as one of “Japan’s 100 Scenic Spots,” “100 New Travel Destinations in Japan,” and “500 Beautiful Walking Trails in Japan.”
The red-crowned crane is a bird found in this region.
This bird has a bright red crown, and in the Ainu language, it is called “Sarurun Kamui” (the god of the marsh).
It was designated as a National Special Natural Monument in 1952.
While red-crowned cranes are migratory birds, those living in eastern Hokkaido are resident birds.
Their habitat is centered in eastern Hokkaido, and they are rarely seen in Honshu or other regions.
