There are jagged edges on the sides, and only four places are shaped differently from the rest.

The reverse side is the same.
The design imitates the coins of the Edo period.
It is written in kanji as “local Autonomy” in four characters.
The year and “JAPAN 47PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM” are engraved.
The obverse has a different design for each prefecture.

The Yamaguchi type coin depicts the Rurikoji Temple Five-Storied Pagoda.
This temple was ordered to be built by Morimitsu Ouchi (1377-1431), the head of the Ouchi clan that ruled present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture from the mid-14th to mid-16th centuries.
The five-story pagoda has a hiwadabuki (cypress bark) roof, with layers of hiwadabuki roofing to emphasize the deep curvature of the eaves. A daikoku-bashira, approximately 50 cm in diameter, at the base serves as the axis of the pagoda and stabilizes the structure. From the base to the top, each floor is progressively smaller, contributing to a balanced appearance. The tower is 31.2 meters high.
