These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Wakayama Prefecture feature Mount Koya and the Danjo Garan.
Mount Koya
Mount Koya is a sacred mountain retreat founded in 816 (the seventh year of the Konin era) by Kobo Daishi Kukai.
In 2004 (Heisei 16), it was registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site (Cultural Heritage) “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.”
Danjō Garan
Considered the first area developed when Kūkai founded Kōyasan, the landscape of Danjō Garan centered around the Konpon Daito Pagoda has become the iconic view of Kōyasan.
