These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coin of Shimane Prefecture features the peony, the prefecture’s flower, in the background, along with the “Otori-osame Chogin” (Imperial Offering Silver) coin, which was manufactured from silver from the World Cultural Heritage Site of Iwami Ginzan.
The Otori-osame Chogin coin is said to have been presented by Mōri Motonari in 1557 (the 3rd year of the Kōji era) upon the accession of Emperor Ōgimachi.
The surface is engraved with “Otoriosame,” which means “offering” referring to the emperor’s imperial edict.
Approximately 1,100 pieces of chogin coins with the “Otoriosame” engraving were specially made for the enthronement ceremony, but only one piece has been found to date.
As an item of high historical value, it is on public display at the Ancient Izumo History Museum’s “Iwami Ginzan Exhibition.”
