These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The Osaka Prefecture coin depicts Osaka Castle and Bunraku.
Osaka Castle
Osaka Castle, located in the center of Osaka Prefecture, is a symbol of Osaka.
It is counted among Japan’s Three Great Castles. The castle tower, reconstructed in 1931 (Showa 6), was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1997 (Heisei 9).
Bunraku
Bunraku is one of Japan’s representative traditional performing arts. It is a stage art form where the narrator (Tayū), the shamisen player (Shamisen-hiki), and the puppeteer (Ningyō-tsukai) work as one to create the performance. It is one of Japan’s representative traditional performing arts, continuing since the Edo period.
It was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008 (Heisei 20).
