These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.

The coins of Okinawa Prefecture feature the Main Hall of Shuri Castle, the largest wooden structure in Okinawa Prefecture, and a depiction of kumi-odori dance.

Shuri Castle is the ruins of a gusuku (castle) located on a hill overlooking Naha Port, once a hub for overseas trade, in Shuri, Tyu-zan, Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture). It is now part of the Shuri Castle area (commonly known as Shuri Castle Park) within the state-run Okinawa Memorial Park, functioning as an urban park.

Kumiodori is a unique Okinawan musical drama composed of recitation, music, and dance .
It was created during the Ryukyu Kingdom era to entertain Chinese diplomatic envoys.
Influenced by Ryukyu classical music and dance, as well as Chinese and Japanese performing arts, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010.
