These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Nagasaki Prefecture feature Oura Cathedral and camellias.
Ōura Cathedral
Ōura Cathedral is a Western-style building constructed in 1864 (the first year of the Genji era). Designated a National Treasure, it is Japan’s oldest surviving church. It is also the historic site of the “Discovery of the Hidden Christians,” considered a miracle in world religious history. Here, Christians who had preserved their faith for approximately 250 years under severe persecution from the 16th to the mid-19th century publicly confessed their beliefs.
Camellia
The camellia is the floral emblem of Nagasaki Prefecture and is beloved by many as a symbol of the region.
The Goto Islands, in particular, are home to extensive natural stands of wild camellia, and the area ranks among Japan’s top producers of camellia oil.
