These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The Miyazaki Prefecture coin depicts the Miyazaki Prefectural Government Main Building, a representative structure of Miyazaki Prefecture, and the Takachiho Night Kagura (Tejikarao no Mai) dance.
Miyazaki Prefectural Government Main Building
Constructed in 1932 (Showa 7), this building is the fourth oldest existing prefectural government main building in Japan.
The five-story structure (three above ground, one basement level, and a rooftop tower) features decorative columns on its walls and pointed tops, exemplifying the modern Gothic style. The front garden is planted with the prefecture’s tree, the Phoenix palm, along with sago palms and agaves, ensuring year-round greenery.
Takachiho night kagura
This night kagura dance is passed down in the Takachiho area, known for the myth of the descent of the heavenly grandchildren.
Performed annually from November to February across approximately 20 districts in the town, it involves dancing through the night to all 33 designated pieces (program). It was designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1978.
