These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Mie Prefecture feature the Isuzu River and the Uji Bridge of Ise Grand Shrine.
Isuzu River
The Isuzu River flows along the western edge of Ise Grand Shrine (Naigū).
It has been celebrated in numerous waka poems since ancient times.
The river lies within the Ise-Shima National Park, designated in 1946 (Shōwa 21).
The surrounding area is one of the park’s most representative scenic spots.
Ise Grand Shrine Uji Bridge
This bridge is a wooden structure spanning the Isuzu River.
It stands at the entrance to the approach path of Ise Grand Shrine (Naigū).
It is rebuilt every 20 years, preceding the Shikinen Sengū ritual held once every 20 years.
