These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.

The Kumamoto Prefecture coin features Nakadake (one of the five peaks of Aso) as seen from Kusasenri Beach.

Nakadake
Nakadake is one of the representative mountains of Aso, which has one of the world’s largest calderas.
Together with Takadake, Nekodake, Eboshidake, and Kishimadake, it is called “Aso Five Mountains” or “Aso Mountain.”
Nakadake is still active and emits smoke, making it a symbol of Kumamoto, the “land of fire.”

Kusasenri Beach
Kusasenri Beach is the remains of a side volcano of Eboshidake. It is a beautiful grassland that is also used as a grazing ground.
