Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coin from Kochi Prefecture features a portrait of Ryoma Sakamoto, a historical figure representative of Kochi, and a view of Katsurahama Beach.
Sakamoto Ryoma (1835–1867) was a samurai who lived during the late Edo period.
During the turmoil of the late Edo period, he was actively involved in the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance and the Restoration of Imperial Rule. He also organized the Kameyama Shachu and was involved in foreign trade.
Katsurahama is one of Kochi Prefecture’s most famous scenic spots. This beach, which faces the Pacific Ocean, is also renowned as a place where the moon can be seen.
