These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.

The Kanagawa Prefecture coin depicts Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, representing the ancient samurai capital of Kamakura, and yabusame horseback archery.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
Constructed at its present location in 1180 when Minamoto no Yoritomo, founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, entered Kamakura.
The shrine was positioned as a guardian of the shogunate.
The main hall and offering hall of the Upper Shrine, built during the Edo period, were designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan in 1996.

Yabusame
A traditional equestrian archery technique, practice, and ritual involving shooting arrows at targets from a galloping horse.
At Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, it is performed as a sacred ritual dedicated during events like the Hojoe Festival (originally a ceremony admonishing killing, later incorporating elements of a harvest festival and thanksgiving).
