It is written in kanji as “local Autonomy” in four characters.
The year and “JAPAN 47PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM” are engraved.
The obverse has a different design for each prefecture.
The KAGOSHIMA type depicts ”Sakurajima” .
Sakurajima(桜島) is part of the Okuma Peninsula located in Kinkobay and is famous for being an active volcano.
Originally an island(島) as its name suggests, it became connected to the mainland during an eruption in 1914, but ferry voyage to the island is still frequent.
The volcano at the center of Sakurajima consists of two peaks, Kitadake(北岳) and Minamidake(南岳), forming a composite volcano that occupies most of Sakurajima’s area of 77 km².
The entire island appears to be one giant mountain, creating a unique image of a massive mountain floating in the sea.
Known since ancient times as a mountain with active volcanic activity, its size and landscape have made it a symbol of Kagoshima Prefecture and a long-time source of comfort for its residents.
The volcano is still active today, and seeing ash falling from the mountain has become a familiar sight.
