Ritsurin Garden
This park is the only site in Shikoku designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
It is highly regarded as an early Edo period strolling daimyo garden boasting nearly four centuries of history.
Around 1631 (during the Kanei era), the southern lake area was landscaped by Lord Ikoma Takatoshi, the feudal lord of Sanuki Province. It was inherited by Matsudaira Yorishige, the first lord of the Takamatsu domain, who entered the domain in 1642 (Kan’ei 19). It was completed as “Ritsurin-so” in 1745 (Enkyo 2) during the reign of the fifth domain lord, Yoritaka.
Subsequent domain lords continued renovations, and it served as the secondary residence of the Matsudaira family for eleven generations until the Meiji Restoration.
It opened to the public as a prefectural park in 1875 (Meiji 8) and was designated a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty under the Cultural Properties Protection Act in 1953 (Showa 28).
