The coins of Fukushima Prefecture feature Hideyo Noguchi, Mount Bandai, and Lake Inawashiro.

Hideyo Noguchi
Hideyo Noguchi overcame a disability in his left hand caused by childhood burns to achieve great things as a bacteriologist. His life is known as a symbol of “unwavering effort,” embodying his refusal to be defeated by poverty and numerous hardships as he persistently tackled research into disease.

Mount Bandai
Mount Bandai, an active volcano standing 1,819 meters tall north of Lake Inawashiro in Fukushima Prefecture, is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains and is also called “Aizu Fuji.” Its 1888 major eruption formed the rugged terrain known as “Urabandai” and a group of lakes including Goshikinuma. The contrast with the beautiful southern “Omote-Bandai” is a defining feature, making it a popular resort destination for hiking, skiing, and sightseeing.

Lake Inawashiro
Lake Inawashiro, located in Fukushima Prefecture, is Japan’s fourth-largest lake. Also known as “Lake Tenkyo” (Mirror Lake), it is famous for its highly transparent waters that reflect Mount Bandai.
