These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.
The coins of Fukui Prefecture feature dinosaurs and Tojinbo.
Eighty percent of the dinosaur fossils discovered in Japan were found in Fukui Prefecture.
The reason why so many dinosaur fossils have been discovered in Fukui Prefecture (Katsuyama City) is that bone beds, areas where bones and other remains were concentrated, were found in the sedimentary layers that accumulated during the time when dinosaurs lived.
Additionally, the discovery of a crocodile fossil from the Early Cretaceous period in Katsuyama City in 1982 led to large-scale and concentrated excavations, which is another reason for the abundance of fossils.
Tōjinbō is one of Fukui Prefecture’s most representative tourist destinations.
Tōjinbō features massive columnar jointing that stretches approximately 1 kilometer along the northern coastline of Fukui Prefecture. Such large-scale columnar jointing is extremely rare worldwide. Due to its geological significance, it has been designated as a National Natural Monument and a Place of Scenic Beauty.
