These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.

The coin of Chiba Prefecture depicts the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line and rapeseed flowers.

Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line
The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is a 15.1 km toll road exclusively for automobiles that opened in 1997 (Heisei 9). It crosses the central part of Tokyo Bay, connecting Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture with Kawasaki City in Kanagawa Prefecture on the opposite shore in 15 minutes.
The 4.4 km bridge section from Kisarazu City is Japan’s longest, while the approximately 9.5 km section from Kawasaki City consists of tunnels.
The “Umihotaru” (Kisarazu Artificial Island) at the bridge-tunnel junction offers 360° ocean views and is renowned for its stunning sunrises, sunsets, and nightscapes, making it a premier tourist spot in Chiba Prefecture.

Rapeseed Flowers
Rapeseed flowers are the collective name for flowers of plants in the Brassicaceae family. In 1954 (Showa 29), they were selected as Chiba’s “prefectural flower” through a public contest and are widely loved.
