These silver coins were issued to commemorate the enforcement of Japan’s Local Autonomy Law.
Each of the 47 prefectures has its own unique design.

The silver coins of Aomori Prefecture feature designs of the Aomori Nebuta and Hirosaki Neputa festivals, as well as apples.

The Aomori Nebuta is a summer festival held in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture, in August.
It is a large festival that attracts many tourists every year.
In 1980, it was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
Nebuta is a festival where giant floats depicting legends and historical figures from Japan and China, kabuki, and gods and Buddhas are paraded through the town by dancers. In recent years, floats have also been created based on local legends, famous people, and TV programs (especially NHK’s Taiga dramas).

The coin features an apple, a specialty of Aomori.
Aomori Prefecture is the top apple-producing region in Japan, and its apples are popular nationwide.
