Shin(New)-Kan’ei Tsuuho Type Ashio Sen Kanpō era 足尾銭

The Kan’ei Tsūhō coin bearing the character for “足” on its reverse.
To alleviate the financial hardship caused by declining copper production at the Ashio Mine in Nikko City, in February of Kanpō 1 (1741), a request was made to the shogunate for permission to mint one-mon coins at the Ashio Mine, leading to the minting of the “Ashio Sen: Ashiji Sen” coins.
