To alleviate the financial hardship caused by declining copper production at the Ashio Mine in Nikko City, in February of Kanpō 1 (1741), a request was made to the shogunate for permission to mint one-mon coins at the Ashio Mine, leading to the minting of the “Ashio Sen: Ashiji Sen” coins.
