Old Banknote

Clan Banknote(藩札 Hansatsu)

During the Edo period, Japanese clans issued paper currency known as “hanbuda” for use within the clan. These paper currencies complemented the Tokugawa shogunate’s coinage. Most clan bills had the same value as silver, but bills with the same value as gold or copper were also circulated. In addition, some could be exchanged in kind for commodities such as rice. In addition to those issued by clans, some were issued by rice wholesalers in Osaka and Edo.
