Daiba Tsuho Edo Shinagawa 250 Mon | It says “1853, distributed as wages to those engaged in construction, Odaiba Office.” |
These coins are said to have been provided to craftsmen during the construction of the Odaiba at the end of the Edo period.
It is said that it was made because it was troublesome to prepare 250 pieces of Kan’ei Tsuho each time when preparing the daily allowance.
Reference “Shiba Ward History” (issued in March 1939)… It was troublesome to pay salaries in ordinary coins, so new coins were minted for convenience, one of 50Mon and the other of 250Mon. These are the daiba tsuho.” It is written as follows.
However, it is rumored that the Daiba Tsuho was a coin created by Ichiro Kotabe.
Mr. Kotabe was an ideas man and was good at coming up with coins that collectors liked.
In modern Japan, there is still a theory that the Daiba Tsuho is a real coin, but the truth is unknown.
It is not known if it really existed, although it has been described as a document. The photo shows a 250Mon type coin. Other coins of the 50Mon type also exist.
The product in this photo was probably manufactured after 1914. The material is not certain, but it is believed to be brass.
