Old Coins

This new Kan'ei Tsūhō coin has been classified as a Genbun period coin in older catalogs. However, excavation surveys have uncovered it beneath the ash of the Hōei volcano, leading to the increasingly accepted theory that it is not a Genbun period coin.Its precise date of minting remains unknown. Some speculate it may date as far back as the Genroku period.

Wakayama Sen (coins) are believed to have been first minted in Nakanojima Village, Nagasu County, Kii Province, in 1737.　The coin has a unique font and is beautifully crafted.

A typical Sendai Ishinomaki coin from the Kyōhō period has the character “仙” on the back.The prevailing theory is that these coins were minted after 1728, but some argue that they were first minted during the Shōtoku period, so the details are unclear.Coins from the Genbun period have the character “千” on the back. These coins were also made in Sendai.

This coin belongs to a group known as Hirano Shinden coins.It is a rare coin with few known examples in existence.It is believed to have been minted in Hirano Shinden Village, Fukagawa, Edo in 1739.

The name “Yotsuhō” for this coin comes from the poor quality of the Hōei Yotsuhō silver coins, which were unpopular. Because of their poor quality, they were called Yotsuhō coins.It was long believed that they were made during the Hōei period, but recent excavations have shown that they date back to the Genroku period.

The name of the coin comes from Fujisawa and Yoshida Jima, which are place names. A coin mint was established in Ashikaga Kamigun, Kanagawa Prefecture.It is said that coin minting began in December of the 4th year of the Genbun era, but this is not confirmed.

Commonly known as Maruya Sen(丸屋銭)Many catalogs list the year of minting as the Shotoku period（正徳期）, but there are various theories regarding the actual minting date, and details remain unclear.
